Scaffolds and Aerial Lifts
Scaffolding Safety
-
Only FSS equipment may be used. All scaffolding must meet OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart L.
-
A trained competent person must supervise setup and removal and tag scaffolds:
-
Green: Safe to use
-
Yellow: Use with fall protection
-
Red: Do not use
-
-
Scaffolds must be inspected daily. Workers must be trained on:
-
Hazards (falls, electrical, falling objects)
-
Fall protection systems
-
Proper material handling
-
Load limits
-
-
Any changes to fall protection during setup/removal require Safety Director approval.
-
Inspect all components before use—do not use damaged parts.
-
Scaffolds must be built on stable foundations with proper base plates and supports.
-
All components must be secured/pinned to prevent movement.
-
Platforms must be fully planked with minimal gaps (≤1 inch).
-
Planks must extend 6–12 inches beyond supports.
-
Plank overlap requires:
-
Support underneath
-
Minimum 12-inch overlap
-
-
Use only scaffold-grade planking.
-
Use ladders or stairs for access (no climbing cross braces).
-
Suspended scaffolds require independent lifelines and full-body harnesses.
-
Scaffold height limits:
-
Max 4:1 height-to-base ratio (3:1 for aluminum)
-
-
Protect workers below using:
-
Toe boards, netting, or canopies
-
-
Follow the JHA for all scaffold use.
