Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO)

Purpose
LOTO prevents injuries from unexpected release of energy while working on equipment or systems.

Scope
LOTO applies to all hazardous energy, not just electrical, including:

• Mechanical, hydraulic, and piping systems

• Equipment affected by gravity

Control Measures

• Disconnect or block energy sources

• Unplug tools before servicing

• Secure equipment to prevent movement

• Follow site-specific LOTO procedures

General Rules

• Control all energy sources

• Never assume equipment is safe

• Test to confirm equipment is de-energized

• Watch for stored/residual energy

• Apply your own lock and tag before going to work

Enforcement
Failure to follow LOTO rules may result in discipline. Ask your supervisor if you are unsure.
